A customer asked us to help improve the sizing system for clothes offered in the e-shop. Different sizing scales for different clothing brands were causing confusion for shoppers when choosing the right size, leading to an increase in returns. Therefore, a system was needed to convert the sizes of the garments to a uniform system before the products were published on the website.

In order to improve the shopping experience of e-shoppers and reduce returns, we initially planned the most appropriate strategy to create a single clothing sizing system. The strategy included not only the final solution, but also addressing the various risks associated with the implementation of the new functionality.

Project challenge
The client’s need was for a non-standard approach and an extension of the functionality of the existing e-commerce platform. The project required both an analytical approach and technical solutions. The main challenge was to create a system that customers would not even be aware existed, yet would perform its functions efficiently, converting different sized systems into a single system that is familiar and easy to use for end consumers in Latvia.

The initial requirements and the planned solution included the creation of a unique feature and the extension of the basic functionality of the e-commerce module WooCommerce. Consequently, there were risks of e-shop disruption in different buyer journey scenarios. The client’s product range not only included different brands with different sizing scales, but for some clothing collections the manufacturers had also provided different sizing systems within the same brand.

Before we started programming the new function, we planned to explore possible solutions and identify different scenarios. During the analytical phase, a programmer was also involved to help design the size conversion system to be easy to use for the customer and to minimise any potential technical errors. During the research phase, we worked with the client’s actual product data – the brands offered and the size scales.
